BVE versus OpenBVE

Okay, here's my two cents. Because I just voted for BVE2, and I'm going to explain why. BVE2 was focused on the idea, as others have just previously stated, to be a cabview simulator. Now as you know, I only develop routes for BVE2, and it's going to stay that way as of today, and if you don't like it, then sue me. Now on OpenBVE's part, I like the fact that I can now express the actual basics of a train simulator, such as, yes, exterior views, animation, timers, ATO, etc. That's nice, especially for BVE. But times I ask myself: can this be implemented into BVE2? I suppose not at this point.

My pride and joy, the HL line, hopefully expected to be released later this year, is a great line to run through in BVE2, the Sim it will be meant for. And let me say this again in caps: THE HL LINE WILL BE MEANT FOR BVE2 ONLY. Apparently I have to do that, because people end up running BVE2 routes in OpenBVE when we clearly stated numerous times that IT WILL NOT WORK FOR THAT PLATFORM. It's not their fault though. Computers designed for Windows XP have become scarce in retail stores in the last few years, some capable of downgrading to XP, some not. Like Kawasaki Plant said, there's not much space left for going back. It's Vista and Windows 7 all the way. And like Joe previously stated, if Michelle had upgraded her program or created some sort of patch to allow BVE2 routes to be playable in both simulators, that would be very appreciated.

I am half and half on the BVE/OpenBVE idea, one because my exteriors could be used as static trains in BVE2. Two, because I use both programs now, and even though I am with BVE2, there's always space for a upgrade. The only problem I face is the upgrade--OpenBVE uses higher graphics than BVE2, which would cause our BVE2 users to upgrade their computers at faster rates just to keep up with the Sim. It is increasingly difficult to upgrade in these times when money must be allocated to more NEEDS than WANTS. So our computers become outdated, and the things that we make, such as higher quality routes and miscellaneous objects, are becoming frame rate hoggers. This is why I said in the R62 topic: until we've reached that point where we can say, that a majority, if not all of our members are capable of running our OpenBVE releases without serious lag, then we must reduce the quality of such releases until that point has been reached (I.E. The low quality/high quality G line).

I don't hate OpenBVE, and I don't hate BVE either. But like coneykidw8 said, OpenBVE isn't about the "future" or about the "exterior views". No one can predict the future, so I don't know why she even tries to push that slogan. Michelle could shut OpenBVE down tomorrow, in the FUTURE. And a train simulator isn't built on an EXTERIOR VIEW alone. There's a train, passengers, two damn rails, and stations. That's what OpenBVE was built off of, so you all need to start looking at that instead of drooling over running top-notch exterior views on outdated routes.

Once I've completed all of my OpenBVE projects, I will focus all of my resources on developing for BVE2/4(once again, sue me), until this legal battle between Mackoy and Michelle is resolved. I truly mean that.

OpenBVE uses a different rendering mechanism compared to BVE, so I wouldn't call it "higher graphics", its simply capable of handling higher graphics.  From what I've experienced, lag is caused by high amounts of high resolution textures, and rendering of alot of faces per "sections" as with the high quality version of the G.  The low quality version of the G is better, but we still get that lag, and no doubt I get lag with the V as well because of the rendering of those tunnel walls.  These things take years to load on BVE 2, and its even slower since I dont have enough room for dual booting (I'm resorting to Virtual PC to load BVE 2/4)

I think it has become more of finding more economical ways of developing while maintaining a high quality, and that should be a goal instead.  If you noticed, I never posted the word "future" in any of my previous posts in this topic, what I said is that OpenBVE paves a way for a larger community, and attracts a larger group as opposed to simply cab view obsessed people.  So yes, the future is uncertain, who knows if this group will ever come to light, although it has sparked alot of interest and I've seen it happen already.  Its a trend.

Exterior Views is like a damn urban myth or something, as the quick-chop excuse for whats wrong with OpenBVE, the truth is there's alot of other crap in OpenBVE, that can use some weeding out, and are actual internal feel problems.  External views once again is an option, just like the AI control, which nobody bitches about that.

There is no legal battle, because there simply never was one.  Its all community generated, which appears to be originated from here about the naming issues.  I've done more research about the naming issues, and I've stated before michelle did post a poll about the name, and democracy voted to name it OpenBVE.  As for mackoy himself, he's not so innocent either, as BVE originates from the 255 Series train.
See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/255_series

As with michelle I have my personal issues with her, as I was the first one to be criticized by her, I dont take it personally but, well you know...  I'll look past the person and look at the work.  I am puzzled on how michelle was capable of creating her now "lost" project, reschanger to increase/modify the resolution of BVE 2 and 4, because to me thats hacking the video modes of BVE2/4 and yet is unable to create a conversion utility to allow it to work with Vista/7, but that can be solved by mackoy's explanation about the DirectX Mode issues.

For me, my goals are simply about compatibility.  If there is one program that fails to cooperate, then I cant really do much, but I don't like to deprive the people who actually appreciate the work I do, only to find it they cant run it.  This is why we have help from Aaron who converts the routes to run on BVE 2 and BVE 4 or vice versa.  From the previews of BVE 5 by mackoy himself (with a new guy), he's dropping compatibility for older routes, and formats, and that is a bad idea.  Actually I want to hear your opinions on BVE 5, i'll create another topic about that.

rayv145:

actually, for the 100th time, you can have timers and ATO in BVE 2. BVE 4 utilizes these features more and focuses more on really bringing out the feel of DRIVING a train. That was the whole point of BVE from the get go; to be a cabview sim. Not a train sim, though it is, but a cabview sim, where you only focus on the operations of the cab

motorman23:

I AGREE WITH ERROR AND OPENBVE HAS SO MUCH POTENTIAL TO COMPETE with other advertised trainsins such as msts and trainz it just needs more developers who are willing to sacarifice their time and who noes maybe it probably will be better by the end of this year or next year
