About the multiplayer "possibilities"

i saw that april fools joke on a multiplayer "possibility" here:

http://www.bvestation.com/forums/index.bves.topic=2891.0

then i saw this TS type of multiplayer gaming with BVE/OpenBVE using TeamSpeak wich is a kinda "half-solution" (for me) to play BVE/OpenBVE in multiplayer,

then i saw an other "possibility" here:

http://www.bvestation.com/xfiles/

Is this last one also an april fools joke or is a multiplayer really made for BVE/OpenBVE at last?

If it is just another april fools joke then i fell for it :D but if a multiplayer is really made for BVE/OpenBVE, then where could i "get" sum server IP's to go onto?

The second one is the real deal.  There are currently no servers where you can play on since nobody has made any.  However you can make your own server with the included server software.

Download the Compiled Server and run it.  Enter in 127.0.0.1 and leave the port the way it is and click start server.  Then on the Compiled Client, run it, then enter in 127.0.0.1 and the port number, then click connect.  If everything went correctly you should now be connected to the server.  You are now basically playing multiplayer with yourself.  If you have a network of computers in your home, you can enter in your network IP address instead, and you can play with other people on your network.  You can also play over the internet, with friends if you properly have the firewall and port settings open.

It still is for more intermediate users, and not really directed at the new users, but if you think you can get it to work by all means please do.  I dont know when I will make any updates on it though, since I have other things to do.

And if i create a server with that and publish my IP here then anyone from here can connect to it and play along with me?

I dunno if the routes released here have changeable lines with switches so that playaz dont crash into eachother (although i have almost all NYCT routes from here but never tried the switches) so how would it be possible to play without crashing into eachother?

Can there be more routes loaded? i mean when a "secondary line" which is (not used in a singleplayer route and) is next to the main line and descends to an other route could that be loaded?
for example if i play NYCTA and an other playa wants to go on a "secondary line" on it that descends from it to an other route.

Did anyone try this MP out on any of the routes yet?
If yes then plz tell sum infos what happened how did u like it and how did u manage to play without crashing into eachother and so on...

ipaclansite:

If you create a server and publish your IP it likely will not work especially if your under firewall and/or routers.  So you will need to configure them correctly to do so.

OpenBVE Multiplayer Extension can only work with 1 line, all players must be on the same line in order for it to work correctly.  There is no check to make sure you are on that one line either, so you will need the cooperation of all players to make sure your on the right line.

So secondary lines cannot be used, you cant run multiple lines on the same server, and you cant run lines which share tracks on the same server.

Many people have tried the Multiplayer Extension on most of the NYCTA routes along with Teamspeak for voice transmissions.  The tests were successful, but it isn't played often for whatever reasons I dont know.  I think people prefer a blind system done through voice, and not some kind of visual aid or something...

Crashing into each other is not possible, because you cannot see the train ahead of you.  You can only see the location of the other players on your console in terms of distances.  The distances will reflect to your external signalling system telling you whether or not to go.

So to sum it up, I'll tell you what and what not this Extension is.

OpenBVE Multiplayer Extension is:
1. A semi-external system for viewing locations of you and other players on the same line, based on numbers.
2. A signalling system that is calculated based on the distances between you and the player ahead of you.
3. Some form of a Communications Based Train Location system in which other players can see where you are at.

What OpenBVE:ME is not:
1. OpenBVE Multiplayer Extension is not a networked multiplayer system designed for more than 1 route, or routes that shares tracks.
2. You will not be able to see the train ahead of you, or the player ahead of you.
3. You cannot crash into the player ahead of you because you cannot see them.

So its merely an extension of the OpenBVE program, and not integrated as one would think, so everybody's dreams of seeing the train ahead is not true.  Apparently popularity isn't high enough for that either, especially after 4 months of exposure.

I have plans for the future version of OpenBVE:ME however, but it wont be like what you have on your computer right now.  I will create a post about that in another post in the OpenBVE:ME section.

Thanks for all these infos.

Although i'm a bit sad that ppl use that multiplayer very rarely but it might be cuz of that playaz cant see eachother and this might lower their enthusiasm to try it and use it more often but if its bossible to add "visual contact" between the playaz in the MP i'm sure u'll make it.

Maybe i wanted too much from this multiplayer at it's beginning but now i realize that all those what i wrote cant be made in such a short time that passed since it's creation or release and cant have everything at the begining either ("Rome wasn't built in a day" either :) ).

I'll try to run a server when i "ran through" the "setup" correctly and have the firewall and all antivirus programs disabled for the time i run the server.

Well thx again and i will check the OpenBVE:ME section from time to time for ur updates.
One more thing for now: do u have any dates for the next/first "upgrade" of the OpenBVE:ME to be released yet?
